Kadayawan sa Dabaw festival

It is a celebration of Good Harvest! This globally famous festival is a weeklong celebration and thanksgiving for nature’s bountiful harvest. Kadayawan Festival is being celebrated every 3rd Week of August. A celebration of the plentiful harvests of fruits and orchids during the season. Kadayawan is derived from the prehistoric word “madayaw,” a warm and friendly greeting also used to explain a thing that is valuable, superior, beautiful, good, or profitable, “Kadayawan” in Mandaya means anything that brings fortune, a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living. Ethnic tribes around Mt. Apo usually gathered during the harvest-time when they had a bountiful harvest to give thanks to their gods particularly the all-powerful Bathala (supreme God). According to legend, the occasion is noticeable by happiness, singing, and dancing, as well as offerings to their divine protectors.

The festival is celebrated in the month of August with floats of fresh flowers and fruits, and indak-indak sa kadalanan or street dancing in colorful costumes. A variety of tribes parade the streets with their tribal costumes and jewelry. The city of Davao comes alive every year in August when it holds it yearly harvest festival. The streets are adorned with local fruit & vegetables while people hold street dances with abandon for four days. The harbour is the venue for native & power boat races. Everybody fights for seats to watch the Horse Fighting wherein stallions fight each other over the rights to mate with a mare. The crowd is sometimes tracked by the horses if they get too close. The last day the street is full of costumed dancers dancing to the local beat & decorated floats with glamorous Mindanao girls as eye candy. It´s a time of fun & abandon. The festivity is not complete without the Bya´Neng ng Kadayawan or the Miss Kadayawan beauty contest. There is also the horsefight, a tribal animal show similar to the bullfight in Spain.

History

The festival began from a government-initiated program called “Unlad Proyekto Davao” in 1986, planned to unite the Davaoeños after the chaotic martial law years and to showcase the city as a peaceful and colorful place to visit and do business in. At the time, it was called “Apo Duwaling,”a name created from the icons Davao was famous for: Mt. Apo, the country´s highest peak; durian, the king of fruits; and waling-waling. The queen of orchids. Davao is also home of the majestic Philippine eagle, the national bird. In 1988, the festival was renamed “Kadayawan sa Dabaw” by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to celebrate the city´s unique wealth in flowers, fruits, and ethnic culture.

Today, Kadayawan has transformed into a festival of festivals, the mother of may other festivals in the region as it honors Davao’s artistic, cultural and historical heritage, its past personified by the ancestral “lumads”, its people as they celebrate on the streets, and its floral industry as they parade in full regalia in thanksgiving for the blessings granted on the city.

“Kadayawan sa Dabaw” is an enriching experience with a difference as its explores the past, present and future of the Davaoeños, the Mindanaoans, the Filipinos. Longaniza Festival in Vigan

In an effort to increase public awareness of Vigan as a unique historic city to be conserved and protected, the Save Vigan Ancestral Homes Association, Inc. (SVAHAI), a local non-government organization involved in the conservation of Vigan Heritage, initiated the 1st Viva Vigan Festival of the Arts in May 1993. With the help of members of print and broadcast media, as well as Manila-based proponents of conservation, the first festival was a success.

Encouraging public response has made festival a yearly activity. It has also proven to be a stimulus for the local tourism industry. Over the past years, the Viva Vigan Festival has become one of the biggest cultural events in the North, attracting domestic and foreign visitors who come to Vigan on a pilgrimage to our heritage.

Viva Vigan is held every 1st week of May. It features a calesa parade, binatbatan street dancing, ramada games, religious rituals, santacruzan, bankathon, exhibits, trade/food fairs, abel-iloco fashion show and other exciting events.

How to get there

Travel time roughly takes 8-12 hours by car or bus, depending on the traffic. There are many air-conditioned buses that depart from Manila to Vigan. The buses depart on scheduled times and stops over at designated stations along the way.

Moriones Festival
The Moriones is an annual festival held on Holy Week on the island of Marinduque, Philippines. The "Moriones" are men and women in costumes and masks replicating the garb of biblical Roman soldiers as interpreted by local folks. The Moriones or Moryonan tradition has inspired the creation of other festivals in the Philippines where cultural practices or folk history is turned into street festivals.

Moriones Festival

The Moriones Festival is known widely as one of the most colorful festivals celebrated on the island of Marinduque and the Philippines. Morion means "mask" or "visor," a part of the medieval Roman armor which covers the face. Moriones, on the other hand, refers to the masked and costumed penitents who march around the town for seven days searching for Longinus. Morions roam the streets in town from Holy Monday to Easter Sunday scaring the kids, or engaging in antics or surprises to draw attention. This is a folk-religious festival that re-enacts the story of Saint Longinus, a Roman centurion who was blind in one eye. The festival is acterized by colorful Roman costumes, painted masks and helmets, and brightly-colored tunics. The towns of Boac, Gasan, Santa Cruz, Buenavista and Mogpog in the island of Marinduque become one gigantic stage. The observances form part of the Lenten celebrations of Marinduque. The various towns also hold the unique tradition of the pabasa or the recitation of Christ´s passion in verse.[2] Then at three o´clock on Good Friday afternoon, the Santo Sepulcro is observed, whereby old women exchange verses based on the Bible as they stand in wake of the dead Christ. One of the highlights of this festival is the Via Crucis. A re-enactment of the suffering of Christ on his way to the calvary. Men inflict suffering upon themselves by whipping their backs, carrying a wooden cross and sometimes even crucifixion. They see this act as their form of atonement for their sins. This weeklong celebration starts on Holy Monday and ends on Easter Sunday.

Apo Island Fiesta

Fiesta here on Apo Island is a very special time, for it is much awaited by the locals here. In the weeks preceding the big day, relatives start to arrive home from all around the Philippines to celebrate the festival. The families return home, the men love to go fishing reconnecting with their roots, while their wife’s help out with house hold preparations. April 4 is the Despratas, the festival´s eve of the Fiesta of San Vicente Ferror the saint of fishermen.

Each of the Purok’s presents a boat decked out in homemade lively Fiesta motifs, the regatta of pump boats is then taken around the island, much to the delight of the people.

The evening of the festival is a time for party. One of the many traveling discos is shipped over from Negros, stores are set up around the basket ball court and a entrance fee is ged to enter the disco area, the proceeds going to one of the needed projects on the island. Also, they have beauty pageant and dancing activities.

Boracay Dragon Boat Festival

Boracay Dragon Boat Festival, promoted by BIPA (Boracay Island Paddlers Association) has been held for the last four years and was crowned with "international" status from the first splash of the paddle. For the small Boracay community these competitions became the essential part of its social life.

Dragon Boat

Not the Festival itself but the Great Joy of Friendship, Fun and Health building brings people together. You may happen to paddle together with GM of a big resort, yacht owner, web-designer or a chef-cook. The variety of participants can be compared only to the diversity of exotic plants in Mimie´s garden. Mimie with her husband Ariel own and manage the ming boutique Boracay Beach Club hotel. They are known as generous hosts to their guests (from guest´s comments on TripAdvisor) and caring "parents" to their employees (from all the happy smiles of Boracay Beach Club´s dedicated staff).

Mimie joined the dragon boat team "Master Bathers" two years ago. Somehow people managed to pronounce second part of the team name slightly differently which sounded as "only for adults" content. As a result their team had trouble finding new adherents and the President, Candy de Tagle Ledesma, Tootsie Rohnholm, and the club members decided to change name for "BumShells". That´s how the team entered modern digital history book - Boracay Dragon Boat Festival webpage.

Exercising

Preparation for the competition began four months before the actual Dragon Boat Competition. Twice a week Bumshellers would gather for Sport, Sun and Friendship and to be observed by surprised tourists. In the heat of Boracay sun they devoted some hours of their precious time to prepare for the Competition. Not only is the striving for the golden medal moving their bodies in the heat of Boracay weather but desire for the golden relationship, Island Team Spirit. They want to have Fun and share it with everybody around. That´s why Boracay Beach Club´s restaurant Ariel´s House, for a day, became the office which helped other teams to get information and organize their visit to the Festival. BBC became the "BBC" of the Dragon Boat Competition: this small spot on Boracay map became broadcasting station for Boracay dragon boat festival information.

One month left before the competition... Atmosphere tensed. Exercises became every day practice. Warmth from limbed up bodies heats up already hot air.

One day before the Opening Ceremony all Mimie and other Bumshellers came to Boracay Beach Club to prepare for the presentation of their team at the Welcome Cocktail. Taking Mimie´s and her friends´ opened hands & mind & heartfelt attitude to life and people her group managed to bring together an incredibly international team: Livonian, Latvian, Mexican... And that´s when all the Fun started! Wigs, gigantic glasses, rainbow stockings enhanced by great enthusiasm, rays of striking energy and happiness.

Mimie

Here you are, Great Day of Festival Opening! First day participants underwent one of the hardest trials - enjoying welcome cocktails without feeling hangover on the next day of competition :)!! During that event teams presented their Songs of Soul & Cries of Heart to introduce themselves. The next day was 500-Meter Men´s, Women´s & Mixed Open Races. That day Mimie silently returned to BBC We were able to see her only in the evening, tired but smiling, she told us about some difficulties and exhaustion of waiting in the sun but with the consolation of joy that the camaraderie brings. Next day teams had 300-Meter Men´s, Women´s & Mixed Open Races which went easier and more smoothly. Same day, 24 April, at the Awards & Farewell Dinner Party medals were given away. Bumshellers enjoyed participation and making new friends as the supreme reward for months of preparation! Not only new friends but new guests as well: one of the Canadian Dragon Boat participants moved to stay in Boracay Beach Club.

After the competition some of Bumshellers went for Nature & Adventure & Relaxation - to Ariel´s Point Trip. 30 minutes cruise on the speed boat brought them to the beautiful corner of Buruanga. Flourishing nature enhanced by creative thoughtful care makes this place unforgettable experience for many travelers. The main fun of this place is cliff jumping/diving from different heights, swimming, snorkeling, savoring barbecue lunch, and unlimited drinks, and enjoying Grand Life!

Ariel´s Point

Ariel´s Point has become THE Must-Do attraction on Boracay: it hosted Miss Earth 2009, part of "Nokia Team Building 2010" and was featured in TV Program Sports Limited, in the Manila Bulletin, Boracay Sun and other TV programs and publications. Great place for well-deserved Dragon Boat contestants to restore their strengths and get ready for new forthcoming competitions... plus the added Fun, as Ariel Abriam (owner of Ariel´s Point) declares: "God is good! Life is good!"

The Exciting 2011 Boracay International Dragon Boat Competition will be in April. The exact date to be announced.
